Adding color to basic eye makeup (for different eye colors)

Hey Beauties!

As promised, today's post is going to be how to update a basic natural eye makeup, which I showed you here. Again, I'm not a makeup artist, this is just what I've learned through several other media. I hope this will at least give you some ideas as to which eye shadow shades to try, if you like to stick to your basics or are afraid of a little color.

First thing to know, when choosing your eye shadow color is what is your eye color. We all know it's not always as simple as brown, blue or green. You can have green eyes, which also have brown circle around. Those are usually called hazel eyes. Your blue eyes can be very clear light blue eyes, or they can look almost grey. You may have light brown eye or very dark almost black eyes.

Taking all this into consideration...now that you know which color your eyes are, you should know the basic of color theories - the color wheel. I won't go into detail, because this is not my intention. Mostly, when adding a colored eye shadow, you want the color of the eye shadow to bring out the color of your eyes. To do that, you need to choose the so-called complementary or opposite colors. Those colors are find in the color wheel on the opposite sides.

Blue eyes

For example, if your eyes are blue, your complementary color is orange. Which means the eye shadow that has an orange base to it, would bring out your eyes the best.

Starting with the basic makeup that I showed you in my previous post. Then you can darken the outer corner of the eye. I used a warm toned brown, that has some gold shimmer in it to compliment the second shade.

Then I added peachy copper shade on the center of the lid. Any peach or coppery shades are orange based and will really compliment the blue eyes. You don't need to use bold orange, just some shade that is orange based. I also darkened around the lower lash line with the brown and added complimentary gold shade in the inner corner.

My eye makeup is not my eye makeup without the winged liner. You can just darken the lash line or do a regular liner without the wing. At the last step I added mascara.

And here it is how it would look like with the blue eyes. I played a little with Photoshop :).

I also decided to compliment the rest of the makeup. That is why I chose peach toned lipstick and blush, but of course this is not necessary at all. I just wanted to point out the orange shade for the blue eyes.

Other shades:
I find that basic smokey eye (black grey) looks especially amazing with blue eyes. The other shades that also work really nice with blue eyes are red and yellow based eye shadows. Gold for example.

Green eyes

Moving on to green eyes, the complimentary color is red. Which means red based eye shadow shades should look amazing with green eyes.

As with the previous eye makeup, I started with the basic natural makeup. Then I added red based brown shade in the outer corner to darken it up a bit.

I did the same around the lower lash line. Then I added sort of cranberry eye shadow shade on the center of the lid. Of course I also added winged liner, for a bit more definition.

I finished it all with volumizing mascara.

Here is again, how it should look like with the actually green eyes. Making them pop a bit more.

Intentionally I also added red lipstick and brick red blush. Of course it is not necessary to do that. The rest of the makeup can be less colorful or more, it's up to you.

Other shades:
One of the shade that looks also amazing on the green eyes is violet or purple. Orange based eye shadow also really suit green eyes.

Brown eyes

When it comes to brown eye color, anything goes. Or so says the theory. Because it's somewhat a neutral color and the one that can't be find in the color wheel, everything should look nice. If you have more hazel eyes with green tones, you can go with red based makeup. If you have yellow tones in it you can bring them out with violet eye shadow. I decided to show you a more subtle color and that is gold, which I think looks good on pretty much any eye color, but especially on darker colored eyes.

As you can see I darkened the outer corner with a warm brown shade. I also put it around the lower lash line.

Then I added gold shade on the center of the lid and of course finished with winged eyeliner and mascara.

Other shades:
If your brown eyes have yellow tones to it, they look amazing with purple eye shadow. The shade that also looks amazing with brown eyes is blue. Blue looks especially good on cooler skin tones and darker (black) hair.

If you figured the system, you should realize by now, which shades are complimentary to which eye color. For example complementary color for blue eyes is the opposite color in the color wheel - orange. So orange based eye shadow looks amazing with blue eyes. The other shades that also go really well with blue eyes are the two shades next to the orange - which are yellow and red. So, yellow and red based eye shadow should also look amazing on you.

If your color is brown, just look for those little nuances in the eye color. If you look at my eye color, you can definitely see yellow color to it. That is why gold shades merge with my eye color, which also means that gold shade looks very natural and part-of-me shade. Purple further brings out my eyes. Blue would do the same, but the problem being it's mostly cool toned and it clashes with my yellow skin undertone.

I hope I could help you out with the theory that I've learned from other makeup artists and makeup enthusiasts. This is only theory and you can apply it to your makeup if you wish to, or you can totally overlook it. It's makeup and it should be fun. So you can wear whatever you want to. :)

Btw I realized that my dark brown eyes still look the best on my face. What do you think?

  5. Wow you would look nice with blue eyes :) Well I have brown which a bit of yellow in it. My opinion is, that on brown eyes, purple, gold, pink look perfect. Blue and green not that much but depends, Personally I don't wear any green eyeshadows. i wear a lot of goldish, pinkish, and even green and sometimes light taupe colors. :)

    1. Thanks ;) I agree with you. I have the same and love to wear gold and purple. I'm not too fond of pink, but it also goes really well with the eye color:). Green and blue can be tricky. I think it all depends on which shade you choose:). Taupes and browns are basically neutral shades and they blend really nice with brown eyes:).
